1 Year!

We did it! We made it through our first year of parenting and I think we did pretty good. I look at Ray and I can't believe he is a year old already, everyday he is less like a baby and more like a little boy.
His first birthday was a lot of fun, I did an "Under The Sea" theme. I had a great time planning and decorating, I'm so excited that I get to do something new and fun every year.
There was streamer "waves" and "seaweed", ocean cakes, candy whales, a watermelon shark, snacks served in sand buckets, and of course a kiddie pool.

Ray smashed into his very own cake and proceeded to throw handfuls around the room. I think he had a pretty good time

Craft: Baby Clothes Blanket

This boy of mine is growing non-stop, I literally have 3 bins of outgrown clothes stashed under his crib AND have already given away bags upon bags of the items that I'm not that attached to.
So I got a great idea from a fellow mama to turn the favs into a blanket that we can snuggle with. I am holding onto a lot of items in case future baby #2 is a boy, but since we made Ray's nursery space themed we picked up a few space themed clothes along the way. I figured I would pick out those select few clothes for the blanket. (Baby#2 will get a different theme anyways..)
It was really bittersweet chopping up these old clothes, as I held them up and reminisced on how teeny tiny they are and he was.

So all I did was cut the clothes into squares and sewed them together. I made the border of one of his old receiving blanket. I sewed on a piece of fabric I had laying around as the back.

I didn't use quilt batting with this blanket because I wanted to keep it thin. I have a feeling its going to be a favourite blanket and I didn't want it to be too thick and clunky that it would be annoying to bring along on outings or what not.

11 Months!

Here we are at 11 months old! This kid is unstoppable. I wrote "walking" on this one, however he is not quite walking on his own. It's more walking around while holding onto things and using his toy walker, but I couldn't fit "walking around while holding onto things and using his toy walker" onto those 3 steps. Walking with help is still walking in my books, and that's a big step (pun intended) from where he was at last month. We are so proud of this little guy.
He is just so entertaining, always making us laugh with his silliness. He started waving at the T.V. whenever music or singing comes on and he loves laughing at his own reflection in the mirror. Lately he has been sneaking into the kitchen and dumping out the cat food bowls, as well as trying to climb in the dishwasher.
He prefers to feed himself than let me feed him with a spoon, and that makes for a bigger mess but I don't mind.
Next month... he is a one year old... I can't believe it. I hope this month goes by slowly.

June Cat

"It's time to strike out on your own and relinquish your over dependency on others"

The cat wishes for us to make choices from a place where you maintain your own authority and power. We must review the people and things upon which we are excessively and habitually dependant - then step back from them and identify where you need to make adjustments, and act accordingly.

From this card I believe it is asking me to remain quiet, observe and then at when the time feels right. I have the power to create anything I want out of life, yet I should keep an element of mystery to it.

May Wrap up

This past month was one of the best this year! So many lovely moments and memories.
I celebrated my very first Mother's Day, my boys took me hiking and for a picnic in Kanaskis Country.
I also spent this month on a sugar detox cleanse, the Whole 30 program. I am proud to say that I successfully completed 30 days of no sugar, no gluten, no dairy, to grains, no alcohol, and no processed foods! I feel better than ever. I lost 9 lbs and lost 8.5 inches overall. I also gained more energy and a passion for clean eating. I plan on keeping this up from here on out, with a few changes to help fit my lifestyle. Of course I plan on treating myself here and there, and I am re-introducing oatmeals and cereals for breakfasts.
I have been planning Ray's first birthday and slowly getting supplies and what nots for the party. I am excited yet not at the same time.
We have been renovating our camper and a lot of summer trips and events are being planned whilst doing this. I plan on posting all the before and after photos of this reno, it's looking amazing so far!!

I'm so excited for June to come, I have big plans for you June... Look out!

Space: Balcony Inspiration

It's officially morning coffees and nightcaps on the porch season! I am fully taking advantage of that fact. I have been utilizing our little balcony to it's full potential, and this includes drinking tea out here on a rainy day... I am even writing this blog post out here on a breezy Saturday morning.
Since we are renters we don't have much of a yard, no backyard whatsoever, but we do have a nice long (but narrow) balcony that over looks a small front yard. Since our family is still small I don't mind the lack of yard just yet, however, baby is almost walking and we are thinking that next year we will definitely need more space. So with that being said I plan on making the most out of my balcony since this may be our last summer together.
With a little inspiration from good ol' Pinterest I have compiled a few images to help with the look I would like to achieve for our space. I love the relaxing vibes from all these inspiring spaces. Mine is  slowly but surely coming together; I have potted herbs, planted in the flower boxes, put out all my little garden knick knacks and even bought a brand new (easy on the barefeet) outdoor rug. All that's left is clear the clutter from the back corner and replace that with a BBQ.
Here are just a few photos of the space so far, I plan on posting the full balcony once it's finally finished and to my liking.
Cheers!

Craft: Garden Watering Can

Yesterday was Mother's Day. It was my first on the Mom side, and it was just perfect! But today's craft post is a gift that I gave my mama for Mother's Day.
My Mom's garden is so beautiful, she spends most weekends working on it and it is just filled with lovely plants and flowers. It is also filled with garden ornaments, trinkets, bird baths, solar lamps... pretty much anything you can think of. Some are beautiful, some... kinda... tacky... but hey it's her garden and she loves that stuff. So a go to gift I normally make her is something for her garden. Even for X-mas we made her a stepping stone with Ray's little handprints and Josh made her some gorgeous welded flowers made out of cutlery (she almost cried she loved those so much!)
So this Mother's Day I made her a cute little watering can pouring crystals, so that it looks like it's pouring a continuous stream of sparkly water.

Materials:
Watering can
Clear beads, jewels, or crystals ( I had a few beads and some crystals from an old chandelier)
Fishing line
Tape ( I used duct tape, because I am lazy)
Garden stake with a hook end

So first of a strung 4-5 beads onto some line, with the droplet looking crystals at the bottom.

Then I fed the lines through the holes of the watering can and pulled them close to the can, I then taped them with duct tape on the inside of the spout.

*Note* I'm sure there is a prettier way to tie these in without using tape, and I urge you to try your own way of doing this. I just got a bit lazy, it still looked pretty on the outside and since the tape was in the spout it was unnoticeable

And that's it.

Hang in the garden. It is still early in the season, so once the garden fills out I will take another photo to post. It will look so pretty amongst flowers and greenery

10 Months!

I'm having a mini anxiety attack here, 2 more months and my sweet little bitty baby will be a one year old! I'm not ready, I think back to when he was 1 month old and all he did was eat and sleep and he was so so so small. He's getting so so so big! Sometimes I look at him standing up holding himself up on the patio door and he looks like a toddler, ahh!
Not much is new, he's standing himself up on anything and everything he can and he is cruising around trashing my house (luckily I baby proofed last month). He learned how to give "high-fives" and he thinks they are hilarious. He likes to stand up in the tub and pee... for some unknown reason... boys are weird. He likes to take his toys and put them on any low surface; the coffee table, bookshelves, the cat.
We love going for walks outside and exploring new parks, swings are still the favourite.
His favourite treat is graham crackers and he loves Sesame Street.
That's all that has been going on around here, 2 more photos left to do eek!

May Condor

May brings the Condor into view - you're too enmeshed in this situation, so take a step back and see the bigger picture before making any decisions or taking actions. It advises to practise detachment, let go of control in situations, and to let go of any attachment to outcome.
A few key words to remember with the Condor:
Independence
Solitude
Detoxification
Simplicity
Awareness
Purification

These key words really spoke to me regarding my plan for May. I had decided to do a 30 day detox from sugars this month, so "detoxification" and "purification" stood out and showed me that I made the right decision to do this for May and that I am on the correct path for this month.
"Simplicity" and "Awareness" brings attention to the fact that I need to watch what I put in my body.
"Independence" and "solitude" may mean that it's best to keep to myself during this time, because it's going to be extremely hard not to fall back into my old ways and I need to focus on this challenge.

The Condor's most important meaning is "Re-Birth" so I am hoping to spend this month working on myself and by the end of the month re-emerge as a new healthier person with a new outlook on healthy living.

April Wrap up

Spring is a time where I feel a lot of productive energy, April gives such a fresh perspective. I find myself more motivated to set goals in spring rather than a new year, maybe it's because of all the new life of blooming flowers and greenery or because of the end to a long winter.
This past month started out with a lot of motivation and slow steady progress of creative goals. I worked on a lot of embroidery projects and planned a lot with Josh for our new collaboration.
During the first week it was mine and Josh's birthdays. We had a great weekend together going on little outings around town and treating ourselves to our favourite things.
The last half of the month I may have slipped a bit on the creative projects, but spent time and energy in other areas. I started a 21 day meditation challenge and only have a few days left, this has helped center me. It has given me a new outlook on life's challenges and I am hoping it will help me to tackle them with ease.
I have also started practising the art of tarot card readings, only on myself and a few close friends, it has been helpful with providing tips and advice for problems and issues. I think I would like to continue this and be more fluent in tarot readings for the future.
I spent one weekend doing some much needed spring cleaning, washing curtains and bedding, vacuuming and dusting. My house feels fresh and ready to take on the summer months.
Ray and I spent a lot of time outside in nature; going for walks, exploring, and finding new fun parks to play in. We've really been enjoying the spring sunshine and have been dreaming of all the summertime fun to come.

Craft: Easter Basket o' Goodies

Today's craft I am going to show you that you can whip up something beautiful out of things you have laying around the house.
Easter morning rolls around and I honestly didn't even give Easter a second thought, with Ray being so young still there really isn't anything we can do with him yet. My mom, however, was hosting an Easter dinner and it is usually my job to bring deserts to family dinners. In a previous post you will see the mini pies I had made for last Thanksgiving.
I knew I wanted to make something Easter-y so I decided to make cupcakes with pastel coloured icing and topped with mini eggs.
That was easy enough. By 10 am the cupcakes were baked and decorated and they looked lovely, but bringing them over in a Tupperware container just took away from their lovely-ness.
I decided to display them in an Easter basket, but I didn't have one and I really didn't feel like going out to buy one... so I improvised.

Materials:

Any Basket you have (preferably one with a handle, but not necessary)
Ribbons
Assorted papers ( I used yellow tissue paper, regular white computer paper and brown craft paper)
Scissors

I started by weaving some ribbon into the basket, just to dress it up a bit. I used white and purple ribbon. I also wrapped some around the handle.

Then I cut up some "basket grass" by folding the paper accordion style and cutting small strips. Cut enough to fill up the basket.

Note: I only cut about half a baskets worth. I put a Tupperware container in the bottom of the basket so that the cupcakes would sit up nice and high in the basket.

Then display cupcakes (or whatever goodies you wish).

A bonus of hiding a Tupperware container in the bottom is I had something to bring leftover turkey dinner home.

Hope everyone had a lovely Easter :)

Space: Bedroom Inspiration

I was browsing through some of my pins and I noticed a common occurance, I have pinned a lot of photos of very comfortable looking beds. I love being in bed. Sometimes I walk by my bedroom and notice how cozy my bed looks and I jump right in. My favourite kind of bed has the sheets all untucked and messy with crisp cold pillows.
I have put together a few photos that inspire my bedroom style. I could only fit a few in the inspiration board and it was pretty difficult to choose only 9!

And now we come to my bedroom. On a good day (when it's clean) our bedroom is very relaxing. Dim lamps, candles, my faux fireplace on, incense burning... it can be very romantic. BUT most days, like today, it is the epicenter of our day to day. A "catch all" if you will or as I like to call it "Grand Central Station". This is where everything basically just gets tossed. Normally the closet doors are wide open with clothes hanging off them, the bed has a pile of laundry that you can get lost in (usually with 1-2 cats napping in it) and there is a corner of our room with all the seldomley used workout gear usually with robes hanging from the elliptical trainer. So I thought why not show everybody what it looks like 95% of the time.
One day I will post photos of it looking all calming and romantic, maybe on the next Blue Moon, but it does not look like that today so you get to see reality.

9 Months!

He spent 9 months in my belly, and now 9 months out in the world. I wonder which he prefers?
Everything is happening so quickly now! He finally figured out how to crawl forward after about a month of going backwards and now he is unstoppable. He's crawling all over the house, chasing the cats and getting into places he shouldn't.
I suppose its time to start baby proofing and moving everything above waist level.
He has also started standing himself up by pulling on furniture or the sides of his crib.
He is eating all kinds of different foods now and enjoys feeding himself finger foods like crackers, toast, cheerios, banana and French Fries (don't judge me).

On a side note I am also proud to say I am back down to my pre-pregnancy weight. I struggled to get the weight off, and it was especially discouraging to see other moms get their bodies back so quickly. I tried not to get too down on myself because after all it took 9 months to gain the weight and it has taken me 9 months to work it off, so I am happy with that progress :) I was so happy the other day when we took Ray swimming and I could fit into my bathing suit again!!!

April Camel

April brings a Camel. Trust that you have the resources to get through the challenges before you.
Identify where you want to go then proceed slowly, steadily, and deliberately toward that objective. As you move along, cast away your fears, doubts, and hesitations whenever they arise, letting the four winds lift them up to the sun to be burned away. ** I love this last part and I hope April is nice and sunny to remind me of this. **
We can learn from the Camel to be our own best resource. Pull out your inner talents and skills with ease. It is also a good idea and a practical move to store away some supplies and money for future use. This is what I think of when I think of Camels; the fact that they store water and food in their humps for long journeys.
I will be doing this for April in three ways:
1. I plan on doing this by trying to be a bit more frugal this month, my maternity is soon coming to an end and ideally I would like to stay home a bit longer before returning to work. So I suppose it would be a good idea to put some money away so I can do just that.
2. I plan on stocking my fridge and pantry with good organic food for making more creative meals at home. No more of this take out and going to the grocery store only to get what we need for a couple days. Meal planning is key.
3. I plan on building an inventory for mine and Josh's upcoming business collaboration.

I plan on enjoying April :)

March Wrap up

I was such a slacker this past month. No Craft posts. No Space posts. I honestly just did a lot of relaxing and detoxing. We had a hint of spring that was quickly taken away and now we are back to winter... Boooo! My card for this past month said it's okay to relax, so that's my excuse for being so lazy. I don't regret it so no apologies!
I got Raindrop Therapy with essential oils and a massage, I went to a calming yoga class every week, and I spent a lot of time enjoying my days with Ray

I wasn't a complete bum this month, I have been working on a secret collaboration project with my man. We are hoping to be announcing and unveiling this soon. NO it is not another baby we have been busy making. I've snuck a few photos of what we have been up to into my monthly wrap up photo collage.

I'm looking forward to April. Mine and Josh's birthdays are 3 days apart, this year mine is on the Friday and Josh's the Monday so we will be spending the weekend doing fun family things together.

I hope April brings Spring, I am so over the snow. I want to go play outside!

8 Months!

I love this kid to the depths of my soul. He has come a long way in only a month. He has 2 little teeth poking on the bottom, and he chomps HARD with them! I'm not looking forward to the teeth on the top coming in, ouch! He had some pretty bad teething pain and at the beginning of the month there were 3 days straight of a very unhappy baby. We tried frozen fruits and cold wet cloths, I'm not sure how much that helped. We then bought an amber necklace for him, since wearing this the days have definitely been less fussy plus less drool.
He has also been trying so hard at crawling. Since we have hardwood floors he ends up inching backwards and now he has mastered the art of crawling backwards. He can go from sitting to crawling, and from crawling to sitting.
It was certainly a shock the other morning when I went to wake him out of his crib and he was just sitting there, quietly playing with toys.
He has tried lots of different foods now and I am trying to get him used to more textured food now. This isn't going all that well. But soon enough.
His favourite food is still yams. He also loves apple cinnamon oatmeal, dry toast, apple juice and watermelon.

I love the colourfulness of this months photo, it was honestly a last minute idea for this one and it's now one of my favourites. It's getting harder to think of something different for each month, I normally spend the entire month thinking of what I can do for the next photo. I have a couple of the later months already planned (we will be finally going outside when winter is over!) but I am stumped for the next photo. Hopefully by the end of this month I'll think of something!

March Goose

The goose flies in to tell you to take time to rest and recuperate rather than continuing to strive. It is critical to your health and well being to take time for yourself.
A few suggestions from the goose are to sleep in, get a massage, take a bath or get out of town.
I couldn't have pulled this card at a better time, I need this!
After a bit more research into the goose I came across the saying "what's good for the goose,  is good for the gander". This couldn't be more true! I am interpreting this as - rest for mama is good for papa.
So this month I plan on taking it easy, no deadlines for project's and no making plans any further than a couple days in advance. I plan on using my phone and computer less and spending time outdoors.
The goose also wishes for us to pay attention to stories, myths and legends. So I will also spend this month with Mother Goose by reading lots of childrens books to my little gosling.

I won't worry and patiently wait for spring, happy March!

February Wrap Up

The month of love. So they say. I loved this month and also hated it at the same time.

February brought mine and Josh's 7 year anniversary. We got dressed up, had Grandma come babysit and went out for a nice dinner together. This is something we never do, it was a treat. February also brought Valentines day, which we normally don't celebrate. I usually just buy Josh a cheap box of chocolates from the grocery store, so that's what he got this year. I also made him a comfort food dinner and baked him a cake in the shape of a heart. He was amazing and surprised me by fixing my bike and giving me some beautiful handmade jewellery. What a good man!

This month was also full of tears. Ray started teething. And we polished off the month with a terrible cold (all 3 of us). We've had some long nights and hard days.

I've learned to just take it one day at a time. I've learned to take on life's challenges as they come. February taught me a lot in patience and love.

There was late night drives out of town chasing the Northern Lights, snowy day coffee shop chats, and clearing mental and physical clutter.

Space: Dining Room Inspiration

Slowly but surely my dining is finally starting to look the way I want it to. These photos from Pinterest were my inspiration to create a simple clean dining room.

Last week I sold my old dining room table and chairs. Although it was a nice dining set it just didn't work with our lifestyle, cats = choose your furniture wisely. It was a dark brown/black wood table that was so bulky it made the room look so small, plus the darkness and texture of the wood really made cat hair extremely visible. It was a pain to constantly be wiping the table 100 times a day. The chairs were solid and fabric covered so naturally they became 4 cat scratching posts. I've had this set for 5 years and always complained about it... so I'm happy its gone.

Instead of buying a new table I brought my craft table out from hiding in the back corner of the living room. I LOVE the way this table looks, the lovely wood top and wrought iron base reminds me of a café table. I liked having this as a craft table, but since my craft room is now Ray's room it was not getting much use tucked away in the corner.

My dining room is looking so much brighter, bigger and cleaner. And now it's getting to that time of year where I finally get some sun in the kitchen window it is now my favourite room in the house. All I need now is a few wooden chairs. I plan to find 4 chairs all different but I will paint them all the same colour to match (like in the inspiration photo above)

Before I went on maternity I was a bartender, or as I like to refer to myself as a "Cocktail Artist". A well stocked bar is a must for a former bartender, this is literally just the tip... the rest of the alcohol is stored below and are alternated up depending on my mood or the season.

Craft: Hot Air Balloon Light Bulbs

I decided to stop feeling sorry for myself and do something to lift my spirits. So I crafted! Doing something you love always will make you feel better. After last month where I started lots of projects that never got finished, I felt very discouraged. And this past week I had a cranky teething baby, which meant I was a cranky tired mama.

This week the sun came out, the air warmed ever so slightly and I sat down to start and complete a project.

Hot Air Balloons out of burnt out light bulbs!

**A little side note, I had noticed a couple of bulbs burnt out in my house a few weeks ago so I went out to the Dollarstore and bought some new ones and changed them. Then a week later the same bulbs burnt out... again. I changed them... again. A week later... the same thing. The lesson I learned is that Dollarstore light bulbs are garbage. So here I was (sitting in the dark) with a bunch of burnt out light bulbs and I decided to make something out them. Atleast one thing good came out of these cheap bulbs.**

Materials:
Mod Podge
Paintbrushes
Acrylic paints (colours of choice)
Fabric scraps (colours of choice)
Embroidery threads (colours of choice)
Burnt out light bulbs
Bottle caps

With these there was literally no method to the madness, no rules!
I just lathered up the bulbs in modge podge and covered them with fabric. I cut some of the fabric into strips, some into squares, and some were shapes that have no names.
Then I lathered on some more modge podge and used 2 pieces of embroidery thread, crossed at the top and draped down the sides. I tied these in a knot at the bottom, leaving a bit of space below the bottom of the bulb.
And to polish it all off, I painted a few bottle caps with different colours. Once again (you guessed it) with a nice lather of modge podge these were placed between the threads below the bulb, lining up my knot in the middle on the bottom of the cap.

You can never go wrong with more modge podge.

These will now hang as a mobile above Rays crib, for the time being. When I was pregnant I had planned on making him a space mobile to go with the theme of his nursery. But this and a couple other pregnancy projects I had planned did not get done, because SURPRISE he decided to come 3 weeks early.

Enjoy your hot air balloons Ray!
